What to Do Before Our Disaster Experts Arrive

  • If you've had a plumbing emergency, turn off the water. If your pipes have burst or are frozen, turn it off at the street as well as inside the house.
  • As a first step, if water is above three inches turn off all power to (circuit breakers) to the affected room and areas to avoid possible shock.
  • Keep all electrical equipment off. Don't turn on TVs, computers or other appliances. Unplug all cords and move them up off the carpet.
  • Turn on air conditioning for faster drying if it's warm outside.
  • Remove breakable items. Get your furniture off the carpet - up on wooden blocks or at least slip aluminum foil between the legs and carpet. This keeps the wood from staining the carpet and the carpet from damaging the wood.
  • Pick up anything you can. Move any furniture possible to a dry area and place blocks or foil underneath as a precautionary measure. Leave as little as possible on the floor of wet areas. If not possible to move furniture slip wooden blocks, bricks etc to elevate from wet carpet.
  • Wipe down wooden furniture of all moisture.
  • Remove wet upholstered cushions. Prop them up to enable air to circulate on all sides.
  • Pin up draperies. You can use coat hangers to suspend them from the curtain rods.
  • Remove colored area rugs from wet carpeting.
  • If sewage related, do not handle any contaminated items and do not turn on fans, heating, or air conditioning units as they may spread the contamination.
